James married Mary E. House on 21 May 1845 in Sumner Co, TN (Marr Registrations, Lic #0054, Gallatin, Sumner Co, TN). Mary was born in 1824 and died in 1888. James and Mary lived near Cragfont on Winchester property which was later deeded to his sons by his mother, Susan Black Winchester. James' name appears on the "Muster Roll of Captain Josephus Conn Guild Company of the Second Regiment, First Brigade of Tennessee Mounted Militia, commanded by Brig General R. Armstrong, ordered into service of the US from 25 Jun 1836 to 25 Dec 1836" (Second Seminole War). In 1844, James was one of the trustees of Bledsoe Female Academy (Walter T. Durham, Old Sumner, p 322). James and Mary's children were John H. Winchester, Maria Breedlove Winchester, and Bayless Winchester who died at age four.
