Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Percy, Georges-François-Xavier-Marie Grente was the son of a merchant of wines and groceries. Receiving his education at the diocesan college of Saint-Lô, where he was condisciple of likewise future Cardinal Pierre-Marie Gerlier between October 4, 1886 and July 1891, he later furthered his studies at the the University of Paris School of Law, obtaining a baccalaureate and later a doctorate in law. Entering the Major Seminary of Coutances in February 1892, he later underwent further studies at the Institut Catholique of Paris. Ordained priest on June 29, 1895, he served as faculty member of the Minor Seminary of Mortain from 1895 till 1903, then as director of the Diocesan College of Saint-Lô between 1903 and 1916. In July 1914, he was named rector of the Catholic University of Lille, but because of the First World War could not occupy the post. Superior of Institut Saint-Paul de Cherbourg between 1916 and 1918, Grente was named honorary canon of the cathedral chapter of Coutances in 1917. Elected bishop of the diocese of Le Mans by Pope Benedict XV following the resignation of Msgr. Raymond-Marie-Turiaf de La Porte, becoming thus the youngest French Bishop, he received his episcopal consecration on April 17, 1918 at inside the church of Notre Dame du Vœu of Cherbourg, from Cardinal Louis-Ernest Dubois, Archbishop of Rouen. Named assistant at the Pontifical throne on January 18, 1933, he was elected member of the Academie Française on November 12, 1936, being received on the following November 25, by Duke de La Force. Involved with the French resistance movement during the Second World War, on March 16, 1943, Pope Pius XII conferred on him the archbishopric title 'ad personam'. The named Pontiff, created him cardinal priest in the consistory of January 12, 1953 with the title of San Bernardo alle Terme. The Cardinal died on May 5, 1959 of influenza, early in the morning in Le Mans, the day of his 87th birthday. His solemn funeral mass was celebrated by Msgr. Louis Henri Marie Ferrand, Archbishop of Tours, followed by burial in the crypt of the cathedral of Le Mans. His heart was however deposited in the parish church of Percy, his birthplace, in accordance with his wishes.
