Samuel was married to Clarissa Hewitt on 12/31/1828 in Philadelphia. He is listed in Philadelphia directories from 1836 until 1868, as a "Cordwainer" (shoemaker).

He and Clarissa moved frequently, but always stayed in the Northern Liberties neighborhood. Samuel died of Consumption (TB). His occupation on his death certificate was listed as Medical Doctor. The Camden city directory first lists his occupation as a dealer in medical vegetables, and then the following year as an Herbalist. Finally, he declares himself an Eclectic Physician.

Samuel is buried in Mt Pearce Cemetery located at 31st and Lehigh Ave in Phila. He is buried in a grave with Mary Diggins. The grave was owned by William Milligan, who is buried in the adjoining grave with his wife Hannah.
Samuel and Clarissa had 9 children: George N, Caroline S, Sarah A, Charles, Catherine P, Samuel H, Mary, Joseph F, and Frances.
