Obit - "Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Pennybacker, widow of John D. Pennybacker, died at her home on Linville Creek Sunday afternoon at twenty minutes past 3 o'clock after a some what protracted period of ill health. She had been suffering for some time with a weak heart, which, together with her advanced age, caused her death.
Mrs. Pennybacker had been in bad health for a year and about two months ago her condition became such that her friends were apprehensive that the end would come at
any time. She rallied, however, but suffered a relapse two weeks ago since which time her death was momentarily expected. She was conscious only at times and even
then did not have full possession of her mental faculties or powers of speech, but when conscious was able to recognize members of the family and intimate friends, who
were constantly at her bedside.
The funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock from her late residence. Rev. Dr. B. F. Wilson, pastor of the Harrisonburg Presbyterian church, officiated. The interment was in the Lincoln family burying ground, a short distance from the home.
Mrs. Pennybacker was born in the Linville Creek section, about 78 years ago. She was a member of the old Lincoln family, who have resided in that part of the county for
nearly a century past, her father being the late Col. Abraham Lincoln, a veteran of the War of 1812.
She was twice married, her first husband being Dr. W. S. Maupin and her last, the late John D. Pennybacker, whose death occurred about twelve months ago. She is survived by two children by her first marriage, A. Lincoln Maupin, of Oklahoma Territory, Mrs. Sallie Lincoln, widow of the late Jacob Lincoln; and three by her second marriage, John D. Pennybacker, Jr. of North Dakota; Miss Mary Pennybacker, of New York City, and Miss Kate Pennybacker, who made her home with her mother.
Mrs. Pennybacker was a woman of amiable and kindly disposition and enjoyed a large circle of friends and acquaintances, especially in the neighborhood of Linville
Creek. A few weeks before her death she was baptized by Rev. Dr. Wilson and admitted to membership in the Harrisonburg Presbyterian Church."
