Marthagene Bihn was born on 9 April 1919 in Beaumont, Texas, to Eugene Erastus Bihn and his wife, Sammie McGary. She was named after her mother's Aunt Martha (Martha-) and her father (-gene). She and her older sister, Agnes, were raised by their mother after their parents divorced during the Great Depression. They lived with their mother's uncle; the girls worked at his boarding house and their mother worked at his print shop. Marthagene met Alexander Dumas "Whip" Moore in Washington, DC, where she was working for the Draft during World War II. They were married, 3 March 1941, in DC, and lived in Beaumont, Texas, where they raised two daughters, Sammie and Sally Moore. Whip worked as a fireman for the Mobil Oil refinery. Marthagene was widowed when Whip died in 1966. She married second widowed Edgar Imon Rutledge, 3 May 1968, in Vidor, Texas, and helped raise his youngest daughter. Edgar also worked as a fireman for Mobil Oil. They retired to Liberty Hill, Texas, where they taught Sunday school for several years before returning to Vidor, Texas. Marthagene Bihn Rutledge died, 24 May 2003, aged 84, in Vidor, Texas. Funeral services were held at Maple Crest Baptist Church in Vidor, Texas, where Edgar and Marthagene were members.
