Marie Luise was a daughter of Karl Anton, Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, Prime Minister of Prussia, and his wife, the former Princess Josephine of Baden. She was a sister of Carol I, King of Romania. The princess was married on 25 April 1867 at St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin, to Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders, second son of King Leopold I of Belgium. They had five children.
