Born about 1789, he was the son of Captain Noah and Hannah Brooks of Scituate, Massachusetts. His father, Captain Brooks, came to Camden, Maine in 1806 and established a shipyard which was active until 1819, when he moved to South Boston and established a shipyard there. Barker learned the shipbuilding trade from his father and established his own business at Castine, Maine. In about 1816, he married Margaret Perkins, who was born and raised in Castine. They had eight children, including Marianne (Brooks) Upham, Phebe, Joseph Barker, and Noah, who later became a well known journalist and close friend of President Abraham Lincoln.
