Daughter of Joseph and Phebe Ware Perkins, who came to Castine in the 1760s. She was born about 1790 in Castine, Hancock County, Maine.

Her father built a large home on what is now upper Main Street. She was 24 years old when the British occupied Castine during the winter of 1814-1815. About a year later, she married Barker Brooks, who was the son of Captain Noah and Hannah Brooks of Scituate, Massachussetts. They had 8 children, including Marianne (Brooks) Upham, Phebe, Joseph Barker, and Noah, who later became a well known journalist and close friend of President Abraham Lincoln. Margaret preceded her husband in death by two months.
