Folk figure. She was the daughter of prominent physician and Congressman Dennis Smelt. Caroline Smelt's religious conviction and the personal example she set in her final illness caused Moses Waddel, later President of the University of Georgia, to publish a biography, 1818's "Memoirs of the Life of Miss Caroline Elizabeth Smelt". This book was so popular that in the early 1820s and 1830s several babies born in the South were named Caroline Smelt.
