Professional Football Player. He played at the halfback, wide receiver and punter positions for six seasons (1964 to 1969) in the American Football League with the Houston Oilers. He played collegiate football at Mississippi State University, where he was a member of the Bulldogs' team that defeated North Carolina State 16 to 12 in the Liberty Bowl in 1963 and was named MVP of the game. He appeared in 59 career regular season AFL games, achieving both All Pro and Pro Bowl status in 1965. Burrell was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He died of complications from diabetes.
