Nellie was raised at New Haven, her father's estate outside of Saint Louis, Missouri; a product of the southern culture adopted by her parents. She married physician Alexander Sharp on February 7, 1854. Their children: Navy Captain Alexander Sharp; Army Captain Frederick Dent Sharp; Emma Dent Sharp (1859-1860); Elizabeth Bryson Petitt; Ulysses S. Grant Sharp (1863-1949); Louis Dent Sharp (1865-1946); Nelly Dent Bennet; Jesse Grant Sharp (1869-1870); Julian Donaldson Sharp (1871-1881); and Julia Grant Nolan.
