Leonard Joseph Schwering, 64, of Dayton, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton.

Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 9, 2004 at Carson Funeral Home in Dayton, Iowa. Pastor David Tripp officiated. Burial was at Corpus Christi Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Visitation was Thursday, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Carson Funeral Home in Dayton.

Leonard Joseph Schwering was born on December 29, 1939, in Webster County, Iowa, the son of John and Catherine (Schroer) Schwering. He graduated with the Lehigh High School Class of 1958. Leonard was united in marriage to Mercedes Andrews on August 5, 1967, in Webster City, Iowa. The couple established their home in Dayton. Leonard served in the National Guard, worked as a farm hand, was a truck driver and worked at Diehl's of Dayton until retiring.

Leonard had served in the National Guard and was a volunteer fireman in Dayton for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Mercedes (Andrews) Schwering of Dayton, Iowa; three sons, William and wife Stacy Schwering, Michael Schwering, and Brian and wife Amanda Schwering all of Dayton; grandchildren, Curtis, Damien, Randy, Shyla, Ashli, Michael, JR, Natosha, Chelsie and Dylan all of Dayton, Iowa; four brothers, Bernard and wife Caroline Schwering of Farnhamville, Iowa, Tom and wife Ann Schwering of Versailia, Missouri, Don Schwering of Glidden, Iowa, and Gilbert and wife Peggy Schwering of Stratford, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Loretta Schwering of Dayton, Iowa and Mick Schwering of Centerville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert and Kenneth Schwering; a sister-in-law; Char Schwering; a granddaughter; Crystal Schwering; and a nephew, John Schwering.

Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
