Born and raised in the state of Washington, she moved to Berkeley, CA, to work at the International House and attend school. From 1944 to 1946, she served in the US Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Sgt. She remained in the reserves until 1957. She worked for civil service in Japan and in the US for many years and capacities until she retired from the Department of Public Works at Ft Eustis, Virginia, in 1994. She continued as a full-time volunteer at the Department of Public Works for several years. She then became a volunteer in the Ft Eustis library until age 89, stopping only as a result of medical reasons.

She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Sylvia Thew; her brother, Chuck Thew; and her husband, Eugene Zolcinski. She is survived by a daughter; a son and daughter-in-law; a granddaughter and her husband; and a great-granddaughter. The memorial service was held on February 18, 2007 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel. Interment was March 23, 2007.
