He was the son of Thomas Warden and Sarah Martha Black Warden.

This David J. Warden should not be confused with the son of Robert Warden (D.J.'s brother) also named David J. (1848-1916) (who married a Malissie A. Williams from North Carolina). Tom Warden recalls that his father called the younger David J. Warden "Uncle Dave" presumably as not to confuse him with the older David J. whose nickname was "Jerd."
