Roman Emperor. He was born in 86 AD and raised by his maternal grandfather after his father's early death. He rose to the office of proconsul under the Emperor Hadrian, who adopted him as his son and heir in 138 AD. On succeeding as Emperor he had Hadrian deified and repealed the death sentences passed by him in his final days. Unusually, he was not a military man, and never commanded an army. Instead, he dealt with unrest in Britain by ordering the construction of the Antonine Wall, further north than Hadrian's Wall and stretching from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde. He never left Italy during his reign, but delegated provincial matters to regional governors. He also built temples and theatres and promoted the arts and sciences as well as philosophy. After ruling over one of the most peaceful periods in Roman history, he died of a fever in 161 AD.
