John Helme was born in England and came to America in the early 1840's as a child with his parents, Thomas and Sarah Williamson Helme and a brother, James. They lived in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania where 2 brothers and 3 sisters were born. At the age of 21 he left his sweetheart, Mary Cooper, and moved with his family to Wyandotte County, Kansas to help his father with the rope factory. In five years he returned to PA to marry and brought Mary to Kansas. They had one daughter, Nora May, who only lived 3 weeks. They adopted a daughter named Maggie Marrow. They moved to Saint Joseph, MO. and Mary died of cancer and was buried at St. Joseph. John's sister, Isabella and Charles Mitchell, raised Maggie for two years. John later married Anna Hautzenrader, who had been a nurse to Mary when she was ill. Maggie returned to live with them. John and Anna had five other children, Sarah, Kate, Charles William, Mary Ann, and James. John was a rope maker as was his father, Thomas.
