Death notice from the Wellsboro Agitator - October 7, 1896:
A Tragedy in Chatham Little Marsh, Oct. 5 - Our little town has had its share of excitement for the past week. Mr. D. D. Doane lost all control over his mental faculties last Monday night, and at about midnight he drove his wife and daughter, who were alone with him, out into the street. They went to the house of Mr. J. Cooper and stayed. In the morning Mr. Doane was missing. He was seen later upon his son-in-law's farm up to the marsh. About 9 a. m. he came home and inquired for his wife. She had started for her son's, at Knoxville, to stay until he got out of his mad-fit, as he was subject to them. He then went to his son's, and bade the family all good-bye, and kissed their little child, went to his house, took off his shoes, lay down straight upon his back , placed a revolver to his right temple and fired. Dr. White and others were so near that they were at his side in a few seconds, but there were only heart-beats and all was over. Mr. Doane was a man about 63 years of age. He had been subject to violent fits of temper, losing all reason at times; but the family gave little thought to them, as he would be all right in a day or two. But he at last finished the job which he had many times threatened to do.
