Survived by daughter, Mrs. John Stevens, with whom she resided; granddaughter, Mrs. John Eckert; great-granddaughter, Miss Mary Ann Eckert, both of Stroudsburg, PA. Body at Adams Funeral Home, Blossburg. Calling hours: today, 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Blossburg. Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., the Rev. Richard Landis. Evergreen Cemetery, Tioga.

"Oldest Mother in Area Dies at Blossburg at Age of 104"
Mrs. Mary (Doan) Alford of 111 McIntyre St., who observed her 104th birthday last February, died Sunday (Aug. 30, 1964) at Blossburg State Hospital. Mrs. Alford had been a patient at the hospital for about a week. Mrs. Alford was born Feb. 13, 1860 at Hills Creek, near Tioga, PA. Until the death in 1923 of her husband, Horatio, she lived at Tioga. Her husband was station agent for the Erie Railroad there for many years. Since 1923 Mrs. Alford made her home with a son-in-law and only daughter, Mr. And Mrs. John S. Stevens of Blossburg. Mrs. Alford had been confined to bed most of the time in recent years, but spent a few hours in a chair each day. She was a seamstress and was known for her handiwork including crocheting and knitting. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church at Tioga. In a contest conducted in 1963 by the Retail Division of the Elmira Association of Commerce, Mrs. Alford was designated as the oldest mother in the Elmira trading area. When she reached the age of 100, she received greetings from then President Eisenhower and a plaque from the Tioga County Medical Society. When Mrs. Alford observed her 100th birthday she was presented a plaque by Tioga County Medical Society. Last year she was named Mother of the Year by Elmira Merchants and was presented many gifts.
