Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served on the staffs of two Union generals before rising to command a cavalry regiment. He was commissioned Captain of Company K, 3rd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry on September 21, 1861. He was soon detailed as a staff officer, serving first as Provost Marshall on the staff of Brigadier General Peter J. Osterhaus, then as Acting Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Major General John A. McClernand. He would then rejoin his regiment, being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on September 4, 1864, then to Colonel and commander on April 6, 1865. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on October 28, 1865 for "meritorious services during the war", he had been honorably mustered out on October 10, 1865. After the war he had a lengthy career in the coal mining industry.
