Kate Dunn Dewey was born in LaCrosse, WI and attended local schools there. She was the daughter of Wisconsin Governor Nelson Dewey and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin where she met and later married a fellow student Theodore L. Cole, a son of John Jay and Mary Ann (Lee) Cole. Theodore's father, John was a prominent attorney in LaCrosse. After marriage, Kate and Theodore moved to Washington, DC, where her husband owned a lucrative statute law book company. Kate taught at a private high school for awhile but later she and her husband became very active in the Washington social scene. She had one son Felix, who later joined the State Dept. During his long tenure, Felix became a leading Foreign Service officer with assigments all over the world. Kate died in July, 1922 and was buried at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, DC.
