Born in Switzerland in 1829. Resident of Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania at the time of his 1861 enrollment for Civil War service. Occupation: Barkeeper.

Mustered in as a Private with Company A, 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on 16 September 1861 at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg. Mustered out honorably on 18 September 1864 upon expiration of his term of service. Major Engagements with the 47th Pennsylvania: Defense of Washington, D.C. (Fall 1861); Battle of Pocotaligo, South Carolina (October 1862); garrisoning of Fort Taylor, Key West, Florida and defense of southern territories (1863); Union General Nathaniel Banks' Red River Campaign across Louisiana (part of the only Pennsylvania regiment so engaged from March to May 1864).

Mustered in as a Private with Company A, 4th Regiment, New Jersey on 30 December 1864. Mustered out on 9 July 1865. Major Engagements with the 4th New Jersey: the battles of Hatcher's Run, Virginia (5 February 1865) and Fort Stedman, Virginia (25 March 1865); the capture of Petersburg, Virginia (2 April 1865); the battles of Sailors' Creek, Virginia (6 April 1865) and High Bridge, Farmville, Virginia (7 April 1865), and Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Surrender at Appomattox, Virginia (9 April 1865).

Resident of the U.S. Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Hampton, Virginia (beginning in 1895). Died at St. Elizabeths Hospital, Washington, D.C. on 20 March 1909; interred in Section 17 of the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

[Note: There was no apostrophe placed in "St. Elizabeths" when the U.S. Congress renamed the hospital in 1916.]
