It is highly unlikely that Matthew is actually buried here at Macedonia, as Macedonia was not founded until 1826 and the land where the cemetery is now situated was in wilderness in 1799 with few settlers. He may be interred in Greene County, but the exact location of his grave has not been presently discovered.

The following information is from Max Perry's "American Descendants of John 'Jean" Gaston," from Roy Hunter, descendant, and from anonymous contributors to this memorial:

Dr. Matthew Gaston was the son of Alexander and Margaret Gaston.
He married Ann Simonton on August 12, 1768 in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.
Ann was the daughter of Robert and Margaret Gaston Bishop Simonton.
Matthew Gaston is found on the passenger list of the "Earl of Donegal" which sailed from Ireland to Charleston, SC in 1767, arriving in port on December 22. He was 19 years old when he arrived in Charleston and seemed to have no other family members on the voyage with him. He was given a Royal Land Grant of 100 acres of land in Craven County in 1786.
Matthew and Thomas Simonton worked on the road to Kaintuck over the Cumberland Mountains. A contingent of 300 soldiers were hired to cut a road which would facilitate immigration westward and be a more direct route than the Wilderness Road. Western settlers were begging for protection and the road was seen as a way to send help more quickly. For this service Matthew and Thomas apparently each received a grant of land in Illinois in 1780.

Matthew and Ann were the parents of:
1.Robert Gaston, b.1744, d. before February 15, 1830. Robert married Abelina MNU.
Interment unknown
2.Mary "Jane" Gaston, b. January 08, 1777, d.1870. Jane married George Reid, II.
Jane and George are interred at Reid Cemetery, Reid Mountain, Bremen, Carroll Co., Georgia.

Interment Unknown
4.Thomas Gaston, b.1781, d.May 18, 1830. Thomas married Elizabeth Reid.
Interrment Unknown
5.Alexander Gaston, b.1785, d.1837. Alexander married Sarah "Sally" Garner.
Interment unknown
6.Matthew Gaston, Jr., b.1785, d.1836. Matthew, Jr. married (1) Agnes Forrester Curry and (2) Sallie DeLamar. He fought in the War of 1812. Matthew, Jr. is also interred here at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Butts Co., Georgia.
7.John Gaston, b.1792. John married Martha Blanks.

8. Ann Gaston Palmer, b. 1787 in Greene County, GA, died Claiborne Parish, LA 1865, m. Armasa Palmer.

I keep getting notices that this is the wrong stone for this memorial. I know. I am not the one who posted this tombstone photo. I cannot remove it or I most certainly would!
