Herbert received his early education in the Miller School in Union Co. He was baptized at the Alcester Baptist Church at the age of 12 and in 1928 he transferred his membership to the Big Springs Baptist Church where he was very active in church affairs for 52 years.
He was married to LaVon McAninch on June 30, 1926 at Hawarden. The couple farmed in Union County until their retirement in 1971 and continued to live on the farm.
Herbert was a member of the Big Springs Township Board, the Alcester Lions Club and the Big Springs School Board.
Among those who survive and who gratefully shared his life are his wife, LaVon of Alcester; one son Harlan and his wife Helen of Yorba Linda, Calif.; one daughter Phyllis and her husband Robert Stenstrom of St. Paul, Minn.; three brothers, Leslie and Russell both Alcester, and Harold of Sioux Falls; one sister, Helen (Mrs. Alfred Jacobson) of Aitkin, Minn.; 7 granddaughters and 3 great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by one brother.
