Ellen Lavonia Moore Sheid passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009, after a five-month ordeal with lung cancer.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Friday in Stewart Funeral Chapel in Hollis, Okla. Interment: Fairmount Cemetery in Hollis.
Ellen Lavonia Moore Sheid was born in South Carolina on July 16, 1926, because her father, William Wilcy Moore, was a pitcher for the New York Yankees and her mother, Alma Grace Sapp, traveled with him. Lavonia married Abb Tom "AT" Sheid on June 28, 1943, in Duke, Okla. Lavonia and AT were meant to marry in Altus, Okla., but they had so many flat tires on the car on the way there. AT left on a train just two days later from Altus, Okla., to serve in the Marine Corps in World War II. Lavonia lived with her parents and finished her high school year. AT was severely wounded in Guam, in the Phillipine islands on July 25, 1944, by an enemy hand grenade. AT was in the hospital at Pearl Harbor Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif., and the Naval Hospital in Norman, Okla., where Lavonia would go to visit until he was discharged in April 1946.
Lavonia and AT farmed for a living and during this time, they had three sons. Cody Lee Sheid was born Aug. 22, 1945, in Hollis. James Abb Sheid was born Oct. 28, 1947, and Steven Wilcy Sheid was born June 13, 1951, in Altus, Okla.
Lavonia and AT could not make a living farming, so on April 9, 1957, they moved to Fort Worth, where AT worked as a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and Lavonia was a homemaker and took great pride in raising her sons. AT medically retired from the post office after 25 years and eight months of service. Lavonia and AT then loved to travel, play cards and dominoes, have calf fry and fish fries, sing and play the piano, and spend time with children and grandchildren. Better known as Nana, Lavonia's favorite pastimes were working in her yard, decorating for the various holidays, feeding her many birds, dove and squirrels, and sitting on her back porch with her dog while saying hello to neighbors.
Survivors: Her beloved sons, Cody Sheid of Hollis, Okla., James Sheid and his wife, Lou, of Fort Worth and Steve Sheid and his wife, Annette, of Blanchard, Okla.; brothers, Udell Moore of Denver, Colo., and Cy Moore of Hollis, Okla.; grandchildren and their spouses, DeAnn and Kyle Cross, Brandi and Michael Morrison, Stephanie NeSmith, Thomas and Tara Sheid and Will Sheid; great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Brandon Morrison, Camrin and Syler NeSmith, Colton and Karson Sheid and Brooklynn Sheid; and honorary grandson, Brendan Criss.
