General Sir Rawdon John Popham Vassall was a son of Lieutenant Colonel Spencer Thomas Vassall and Catherine Brandith Backhouse (Evans) Vassall. His siblings included Captain Sir Spencer Lambert Hunter Vassall RN, Frances Vassall, Honora Mary Georgiana (Vassall) Henslowe, and Catherine Spencer Alicia Beresford (Vassall) Saumerez Michell. He was the husband of Margaret Emily (Boswell) Vassall.

In 1822, R.J.P. Vassall began his military career as an Ensign in the 78th Highlanders, and he was steadily promoted over the years: Lieutenant in 1825, Captain in 1826, Major in 1841, Lieutenant Colonel in 1851, Colonel in 1854, Major General in 1865, Lieutenant General in 1871, and General in 1877. In 1879, he was given a baronetcy.

DEATH OF GENERAL RAWDON VASSALL.
General Rawdon John Popham Vassall died on Sunday at his residence in Westbourne Streeet, Hyde Park. The deceased was a son of the late Colonel Spencer Vassall, by his marriage with the daughter of the Rev. D. Evans, chaplain to George III, and brother of the late Sir Spencer Lambert Vassall, K.H., Captain R.N. He was born in 1801, and entered the army in 1822. He obtained field rank in 1865, became a lieutenant-general in 1871, and a general in 1877. General Vassall married, in 1843, Margaret Emily, second daughter of the late Sir Alexander Boswell of Auchinleck, Ayrshire.
