Audrey Caraway Hill was my maternal grandmother. The spelling on her tombstone has an error: "Carraway". The name was spelled with 2 "r"s by some of her ancestors, but she always spelled it with just one "r".

My grandmother had a hard life. Her mother died when she was only about 3-1/2 years old. She was raised by her father and older siblings after that. Her father then tragically died when she was only 13 years old and she then lived with one of her older brothers, Rufus. Rufus became the guardian of Audrey and her brother Gordon. Rufus and his family moved to Arthur's farm near Madison, FL.

Audrey married Joseph Benjamin Hill on 26 July 1920 in Lowndes County, GA when she was about 18-1/2 years old.
She was widowed at a young age - Joe died when he was only 40 years old. That left her with four children to raise without any help. The couple had lost two children previously - a little girl who died at about 18 months old and a little boy who only lived one day. She usually worked at least two different jobs to make ends meet, and tried to give her children all that she could.

Even after all the hardships she endured in her life, she never complained about anything. She was always such a positive person, chosing to see the glass half full instead of half empty. She could always find the rainbow after a storm. She approached her life with a positive attitude, and had a lot of faith in the Lord.
