ELYRIA -- Betty J. Miraben, 89, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Elyria, died Sept. 6, 2006, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Tucson, where she had lived since 1999.

She was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Youngstown, lived in Elyria for 46 years and moved to Green Valley, Ariz., in 1992.

She had been a third-grade teacher at Palm Avenue Elementary School in Lorain, retiring in 1981, and was a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar. Following her retirement, she worked as a guide for Bixler Tours.

She was a member of Green Valley Community Church in Arizona and was founding chairperson of the Green Valley Cactus Cousins Newcomers Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the YWCA and Salvation Army, all in Elyria, and the Elyria Woman's Club.

Survivors include her daughter, Ellen M. Williams of Douglas, Ariz.; son, George W. Miraben of Tucson; sisters Vivian Reid of Sebring, Anne Benedict of Hudson and Mary Jane O'Brien of Torrington, N.J.; and two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Miraben, in 1978; and brother, William Moon.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Methodist Chapel, 312 Third St., Elyria, with the Rev. Alva W. Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Carlisle Township.
