Higley Rites At Cummings
Clarence Newton Higley, 65, died Friday at his home in Basehor. He formerly carried mail at Cummings, Lancaster and Horton. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at the Cummings Christian church with the Rev. William Odor officiating. Burial will be in Round Mound cemetery, Stanton mortuary in charge. Mr. Higley was born May 30, 1901, a son of the late George and Mary Brockton Higley, at Cummings. He became a mail carrier at Cummings when he was 19. He later was carrier at Lancaster and was a carrier at Horton from 1938 until he retired in 1958. He was the youngest carrier ever to retire from the mail service. Mr. Higley was shop foreman for a farm machinery company in Topeka from 1958 until 1965. he also was an airplane pilot and was a flight instructor until 1961. He built an airplane in 1927, and he built the first motor powered road maintainers used in Atchison county. Mr. Higley and the former Viola Mayfield were married May 31, 1922, at Cummings. Surviving are Mrs. Higley of the home; two daughters, Miss Lois Ann Higley, Basehor, and Mrs. Marie Fehr, St. Joe; four sons, Thomas Higley, Basehor, Fred Higley, Horton, Donald Higley, Atchison, and Norman Higley, Topeka; a sister, Mrs. Blaine Bacon, St. Joe; a brother, Arthur Higley, Cummings, and 11 grandchildren.
