Son of Mr. and Mrs. George Howard Martin, pioneers of Atchison county, James was born in the Curlew community and as a young man taught school for 13 years. He was 21 years when he entered the teaching profession. At the age of 34 he began general farming and threshing.
In 1891 he was married to Miss Virginia B. Ashcraft, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Ashcraft of Atchison county.
Mr. Martin is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. P. L. Arensberg and Mrs. George Sanders, both of Atchison; five sons, Clarence, Ralph, Howard and Harold, of Atchison; and Lloyd of San Francisco, California; three sisters, Mrs. H. W. Bowen, Kansas City, Missouri, Mrs. George Hamm, Williamstown and Mrs. Minnie Adams, Los Angeles, California; and one brother Miller Martin, Los Angeles, California; and 16 grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. D. Zimmerman, and two brothers, John and William Martin, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were at the home in Curlew, nine miles southwest of Atchison. Burial was in the Round Mound cemetery.
