Henriene Wells Clay was born on February 5, 1913, to the late Sam and Bessie Wells in Belzoni, MS. She had one brother, Samuel M. C. Wells, who also preceded her in death.

She was raised in a family that not only instilled the importance of an education but also taught her Christian values.

She received her educational training in Deovelente, MS; and Los Angeles, CA. She received a teaching certificate which allowed her to teach school in the Mississippi Delta for many years.

At an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her savior was baptized, and served as a faithful member of Mt. Ararat A. M. E. church in Deovelente, MS. There she worked as a Sunday school teacher and served as the Sunday school secretary. She was an outstanding Biblical scholar who quoted scriptures by memory to the end of her earthly journey.

On January 10, 1932, she was united in holy matrimony to Ford Clay. To this union, five children were born. In 1942, the family moved to Chicago, IL; seeking better opportunities for themselves and their children. Henriene was employed with the Drexel laundry for many years and with the U.S. Post Office until she retired to be the caregiver for her Mother in MS.

Henriene loved people, and their friendship and love meant a lot to her. She was an ambassador of goodwill. She was affectionately known as Granny or Mama Clay. If she could help someone, she did gladly and with a smile. She loved to sew, cook, crochet, play whist, spades, pinochle, scrabble, and dominoes until her health began to fail.

Her journey came to an end on April 3, 2003, at 6:35 a.m.

She leaves to cherish her memories her children, Sammie, Viola, Arthur F. (Mamie), Shirley (Arthur), and Henriene Arreva; her grandchildren, Sharon (Leonard, Jr.), Arthur C. (Tanya), Dawn, Jody, and David; her great-grandchildren, Joseph, Leonard, III, Anthony, Matthew, Felicia, Darrin, Jordan, Taylor, Cody, and adopted in-love twins, Jasmine and Joslyne; her great-great-granddaughter, Ayanna; one sister-in-law, Eva Wells, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Do not cry as you pass me by
For as you are now, so once was I
And as I am now, one day you will be
So prepare yourself to follow after me
