Fred Britton was the oldest of three boys born to John W. and Essie (Harbinson) Britton. After the death of his wife, John was unable to care for his boys, so he turned them over to the Children's Aid Society. They were sent by train to Eureka, Kansas in July of 1898. The boys were raised in separate homes. Fred was raised by Edward and Mollie Wiershing.
