Five bandits, armed and wearing masks made from silk stockings, hit the Olney Bank and Trust at Rising Sun and Wyoming Avenues on the morning of May 4, 1926. The robbers staked out the bank and waited for a bank messenger to arrive, accompanied by a police officer. They disabled the officer, Joseph Kaelin, who fought back with a shotgun blast. Nearby on Rising Sun Avenue, off-duty Officer Harry M. Cooper, 45 years of age, assigned to the Front & Westmoreland Station, was in his home at 4606 Rising Sun having his morning coffee when he heard the blast, followed by gunshots. Another officer had fired on the getaway car, disabling it. They then attempted to get away in a horse-drawn milk wagon that had stopped nearby. Officer Cooper ran from his house and pursued them. Jumping on the running board of a passing truck, he followed the milk wagon, waiting until he had nearly caught up to fire to avoid hitting any bystanders. One of the bandits fired back, killing Cooper.
Four men were arrested and charged with Policeman Cooper's murder. All four were executed in the electric chair on March 7, 1927.
Policeman Cooper was survived by his wife and three children.
