Hooten was executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin Prison for the June 20, 1958 murder of Los Angeles Police Department Officer Thomas Scebbi. Scebbi and his partner, Ramon Espinoza, stopped him for questioning at 2:30 AM at the corner of Kingley Dr and 3rd St., Los Angeles. Hooten opened fire with his .22 caliber handgun, killing Scebbi and severely wounding Espinoza. Hooten himself was wounded and arrested by responding officers. When asked why he did it, he said, "Something inside of me snapped"
