Son of James Johnston Hull and Ana Margaret (McGinnes) Hull.
Born Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India.

1st wife: Fannie Patterson (d. 1909) No children.
2nd wife: Eleanor Goodnough (no children)
3rd wife: Helen Marson Frohlich (no children)

Attended Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee and read law. In 1898, he gave that up and joined his uncle Armstrong Hull in Denver. When the Spanish-American War broke out, he joined the Army and also served in the Philippine insurrection. After a tour in China and Japan, he returned to Denver where he became a newspaper man and followed that trade in Salt Lake City, Utah; Butte, Montana; San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles and Honolulu. In 1918, he sold a fiction story to Scribner's Magazine, which was purchased for a movie by the Universal Film Company. He then went to work as a scenario writer in Hollywood, retiring with the advent of "talkies." His second wife, Eleanor, was a war correspondent in Europe during World War I, writing
