U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, in 1821, he studied law, was admitted in 1823 and practiced law in Halifax, North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, (1832-34) and elected Attorney General of North Carolina in 1834. In 1841, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress and to next the five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1853. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he moved to Louisiana, in 1860, practiced law and also engaged in planting until his death at age 67. His son Junius Daniel was a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, in 1864.
