U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816 and practiced law in Raleigh, North Carolina. Entering politics, he was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, in 1824. In 1825, he was elected as a Jacksonian candidate to the Nineteenth Congress, serving until 1827. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
