Israeli President. Born Ephraim Katchalsky, he immigrated to Palestine in 1922 and became one of the first scientists to join the Weitzman Institute of Science. In 1973, as a Labour Party candidate, he was elected the fourth President of Israel, serving until 1978, when he retired and returned to academic life. He also received the Israel Prize for natural sciences in 1959 and was the first Israeli elected to the American Academy of Sciences.
