Artist. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, he came to Washington, D.C. to study architecture at the George Washington University, art at the Corcoran College of Art and Design and then painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1917. During World War I, he served in the US Army as a camouflage artist and after the armistice remained in France, studying art and adopted a cubist style, interpreting nature in bold, vibrant color arrangements. Returning to America in 1939, he traveled from New York City south to record life in modern America, through his art. Rattner exhibited his painting in New York galleries until 1947, when personal events in his life changed his style. By 1960, his designs in a modern idiom, brought together stories for his concern for the human condition. His late paintings were clearly related to stained glass designs in their symbolic force and in style. He died at age 84 in New York City and before his death, he designed his own grave marker.
