David Messer was born in Haywood County, NC, in 1828, son of George Messer and Nancy Caldwell; he was also a nephew of the famous Fed Messer of Haywood County and a grandson of Christian Messer. David married Lucinda Plemmons, daughter of Thomas & Mary Anna Parton Plemmons. He enlisted as a Private in Company C of the 62nd NC Infantry (Confederacy) in Waynesville, NC, on July 14, 1862. Private Messer was captured at the Cumberland Gap, TN, on September 9, 1863. He was sent to Louisville, KY, and later confined at Camp Douglas in Chicago, IL, on September 24, 1863. Private David Messer died of dysentery at Camp Douglas on August 11, 1864, and was buried at Oak Woods in grave number 1264 (The Confederate Mound).
