Journalist. He attended Dartmouth College in 1920, and contributed to the "Jack-O-Lantern", Dartmouth's humor magazine. He then left Dartmouth and enrolled in the School of Journalism at Columbia University before becoming a journalist at the "Evening Bulletin" of Providence, Rhode Island. He later worked for "The New York Times". In 1926, he went to Paris, France, where he studied French medieval literature at the Sorbonne. He returned to Providence in 1927 to write for the Journal, then moved to New York City, New York, where he went to work at the "New York World" from 1930 to 1931, then for the "World-Telegram" until 1935. He then joined The "New Yorker" magazine. He flew to Europe in 1939 after World War II started, and covered battles there before going to Algeria in 1942 to cover the fighting on the Tunisian front. He covered the Normandy landings on D-Day and wrote about being under fire aboard a landing craft off Omaha Beach. He was with the Allied forces when they entered Paris. He was awarded the French Cross of the Légion d'honneur for his war reporting. He returned to magazine work and for years he wrote a "New Yorker" feature in which he analyzed the United States press. He was a fan of boxing, horse racing and food, and frequently wrote about these subjects. In 1947 he published The "Wayward Pressman", a collection of his writings. During the late forties, he criticized the House Un-American Activities Committee, and in 1949, the "New Yorker" magazine published an article by him entitled "Spotlight on the Jury" about the trial of Alger Hiss. He published "Of Mink and Red Herring", a book of critical articles on New York newspapers. In 1961, he published "The Earl of Louisiana", in which he covered the story of the governor of Louisiana, Earl K. Long, the brother of the Louisiana politician Huey Long.
