Mildred "Modell" was the daughter of Johnnie Marvin Cunningham and Mary Eunice McBurnett of Seminole, Oklahoma, and was one of 5 children. She graduated from Varnum High School in Seminole, OK. She first married Charles William Colby in 1945 and moved to Wisconsin and they had 5 daughters. After Charles died, she was remarried to Ambrose Berna in 1982.
