Henry was the son of Charles Ross Newbold and Frances Kemper Lowe. He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. He was in the Class of 1898 that served in the Spanish American War in the Phillipenes.

Married to Virginia Cannell Trotter and father of William Trotter Newbold.

Died of pneumonia at St Luke's Hospital in Chicago, where he was stationed.

He saw action in many places around the world including WWI in France, Pershing's expedition into Mexico, military observer in Turkey, Bulgaria, etc.
