John Wesley chose to farm as his profession and stayed on the homestead with his father and stepmother. In 1891 he married Emily Foos, the daughter of George W. Foos and his wife Rebecca Dorsey Foos. The couple had two children, Rebecca Jane and Charles, each raised at the homestead.
John Welsey Burtsfield was held in high regard throughout his life and was involved with the Grand Prairie Grange and School Board.
After the death of his wife Emily in 1917, he married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ann Stephens in 1920.
He died from complications of type 2 diabetes in 1940. In addition to his wife and children, he left behind six grandchildren: John, Paul, Mary Jean, Damon, and Harriett Ann Monnette, and Marcella Burtsfield.
