Alfonzo "Al'' Cruz, Jr., 74, of Lebanon, a well known retired Lebanon police officer, died Monday evening, June 15, 2009, at his home in Lebanon.

He was born Nov. 6, 1934, in St. Joseph, to Alfonzo Cruz, Sr. and Isabel Montemayor Cruz, who preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Manuel Cruz, and a sister, Filonena Cruz.

On April 28, 1961, he married Sharon Kay Sheets.

After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 until 1954, during the Korean War, he and Kay made their home in Lebanon. He worked as a department foreman at Independent Stave for 16 years, and then in 1976 joined the Lebanon Police Department, where he served until retiring in 1999. He later worked as a court bailiff for the Laclede County Sheriff's Department.

He was a longtime member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and was very active in working with youth.

Survivors include his wife, Kay, of the home; three sons, Al Cruz III and his wife, Jacquelyn, of Lebanon; Andy Cruz and his wife, Lori, of Conway; Tony Cruz and his wife, Trena, of Joplin; six grandchildren, Joel, Santana, McKenna, Alyssa, Justin and Caedon; two step-grandchildren, Matt and Nate; four brothers, Ralph Cruz and his wife, Juanita, of Canon City, Colo.; Alex Cruz and his wife, Jan, of Firestone, Colo.; Floyd Cruz and his wife, Joyce, of Savannah, and Sylvester Cruz and his wife, Carol, of St. Joseph; four sisters, Mary Lou Ashworth, Agnes Gerard and Genny Cruz, all of St. Joseph, and Tina Donovan and her husband, Phil, of Mesa, Ariz.; a number of nieces and nephews, and several in-laws.

Services for Alfonzo "Al'' Cruz, Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home with the Revs. Fred Bobe, Gary Sheets and Alex Cruz officiating.

Burial will be in the McBride Cemetery, near Competition, under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon.

Friends may call at their convenience in the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to the Missouri Diabetes Association and the Curry Cancer Center and may be made through the funeral home.
