Joshua Ricketts was the son of Ignatius Ricketts and Margaret Poling, natives of Maryland. Joshua's known siblings were Daniel Ricketts and Catherine (Ricketts) Spohn. Joshua was raised in Perry County, Ohio on his parents' farm.

Joshua marriaed Elizabeth Jackson, the daughter of Jacob Jackson and Elizabeth Poling, natives of Maryland. Joshua and Elizabeth were married July 26, 1831 in Perry County. They were the parents of Margaret Ricketts, Sarah Elizabeth Ricketts, Lavinia Ricketts, James M Ricketts, Mary Melvina Ricketts, Justis Ricketts, Jacob Jackson Ricketts, and Catherine Matilda Ricketts, born in Ohio and Iowa.

In 1841 Joshua and Elizabeth Ricketts moved to Van Buren County, Iowa along with other family members. They farmed first in Van Buren County, moved to Davis County and then returned to Van Buren County. Joshua, a life-time farmer, died at the age of seventy-four years.
