MARION - Capt. William Thomas Evans, one of Marion's most prominent citizens, died suddenly early this morning at his residence about two miles north of Marion. He seemed to be in his usual health when a servant went into his room early in the morning to build him a fire but when he was called to breakfast a little later he did not answer, and his grandson went in to investigate and found him dead in bed. The end evidently came suddenly and peacefully.

Capt. Evans as a son of Gen. William Evans and was born at the same place where he died. At the time of his death he was in his 82nd year. He served four years in the Confederate war, being a member of the artillery commanded by Capt. Thomas E. Gregg of Marion County, and was at Appomattox when Lee surrendered.

Soon after the war he married Miss Lucy Stith of Wilson, NC, who preceded him to the grave by about 48 years, and of this union there was one child, now deceased who married H. I. Gasque of Marion. He had two grandchildren, William Evans Gasque of Marion and Mrs. M. M. Platt of Sumter.

Captain Evans served 12 years as sheriff of Marion county and made a popular and efficient officer. He was one of Marion's most popular and most highly respected citizens, a friend to every one. He will be sincerely mourned by an unusually large circle of friends.

In addition to the two grandchildren mentioned above, Capt. Evans is survived by one sister, Mrs. Elijah J. Evans of Marion.

The funeral will be tomorrow afternoon at the residence of the deceased, and the interment will be in the cemetery at the First Methodist church of Marion.
