His father, brother Robert and his Mc Corkle brother in law, all died in that battle. Alexander died from pneumonia. Alexander and his brother served in the same unit. See photo.

Sgt. Alex. McNutt and his brother, Private Robert McNutt served together in the Rockbridge company in Gilmore's Rifles at the Battle of Cowpens. Their brother in law Ensign John McCorkle (Rebecca McNutt McCorkle) was also there.

His property was 7 miles east of Lexington, on the North River, or a mile west of Buena Vista (in 1897). Some of this land was granted to his father John in 1768.

On 21 April 1798, Alexander McNutt, grantee, bought 318 acres on the north fork of James River adjoining land of David Templeton the heirs of John Walker dec'd and others in Rockbridge County, VA. The patent was dated 1 Sep 1780, land warrant #1108, issued 13 Oct 1795. Plus 20 acres were conveyed by John McNutt, possibly his father.

He died intestate. His wife inherited her share of his estate and lived there until Jan 1840. "ALEXANDER McNUTT. Son of John and Katherine (Anderson) McNutt. Born Dec. 10, 1754; died March 29, 1812. Married Jan. 1, 1788, (or 1790) Rachel Grigsby, daughter of John Grigsby. She was born May 7, 1791. A woman of unusual ability and character, left a widow with thirteen children, she reared and educated them. This Alexander was a nephew of Sir Alexander. He served with the colonial forces, and probably was at Guilford. A grandson of Alex. McNutt, by name William Jenkins, built the house at Buffalo Forge, now owned by Mr. D. E. Brady. Morton, page 375, Taxpayers of 1782: Alexander McNutt, 2 horses, Thomas McNutt, 1 horse, 4 cattle. (Pencil note, Which Alex is this ?)." Rockbridge Men in The Revolutionary War compiled by the DAR, by regent Linnette B Peak, of Glasgow, VA. Article includes many other McNutts. Per article in the Lexington Gazette, dated 24 Jul 1941, p 6, Library or Virginia.

I note in the Jackson Memorial Cemetery Survey, Complete to 1960 (sic) by Col. William Couper, available at the Washington and Lee Library Special Collections Dept., page 12 says that the monument says: A tribute by his daughter Sarah Sims of Vicksburg, Miss. to the memory of Alexander McNutt who died March 29, 1812 aged 56 years and to her mother Rachael McNutt who died Jan. 7, 1840, aged 69 years.

The monument is about 6' tall in the shape of an obelisk and it is hard to read but clearly lists his name and death date. GPS: 37° 46' 49 N 079° 26' 48 W, South Main Street.

Photo shows the readable part of Alexander's inscription and the full photo below it shows Rachael's inscription, on the reverse side.
