George Edward Mitts was born on May 18, 1894 in Barron, Wisconsin to parents John W. and Lillian Roper Mitts.

He was a Veteran of World War I. His rank was a Private in the US Army from July 25, 1918 to July 1, 1919.

George married the widow Helen "Ella" Hollenbach in Minong, Wisconsin, at which time he became the stepfather to Shirley and Helen Mae Hollenbach. This marriage ended in divorce.

George eventually settled in Oregon where he worked in construction. He had lived in Baker, Oregon until around 1973 when he moved to Vancouver, Washington.

On June 2, 1976 he passed away at the Veterans Administration Hospital of Bronchopneumonia. Preceded him in death was his wife Oma; parents John and Lillian Mitts; his brothers Elmer Mitts of Seattle, Washington, and Frank Lee Mitts of Springfield, Missouri; his sisters Nellie Mitts McCord of Minong, Wisconsin, Susannah "Susie" Hinman of Redfield, South Dakota, and Clara O'Brien of Wascott, Wisconsin. Survivors are his two stepdaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 7, 1976, at 1:00 PM at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Robert Miller officiated. Private interment was held in The Willamette National Cemetery where he is buried next to his wife Oma.
