The son of Michael Bohan (or Boohan) and Honora Kennedy--probably the same Michael and Honora whose son Martin was baptized in Templemore, County Tipperary, on March 7, 1838--Martin immigrated to the United States around 1868, allegedly as a stowaway. He settled as a farmer in Platte County, Nebraska, where he met Michael and Harriett Mason. Family legend has it that when Michael was dying, he asked Harriett to marry their neighbor Martin. On January 29, 1876 in St. John's Catholic Church, Columbus, Nebraska, Father James M. Ryan married Martin and Harriett, and they had two children together: Martin Joseph Bohen and William Michael Bohen. The Bohens moved to the Los Angeles area around 1892, farmed in Downey, and settled in Redondo Beach, where Martin and Harriett spent the rest of their lives.
