In 1888, gold was found high in the La Sal Mountains, and 10 years later the Miners Basin mining district was established. The town that developed had about 80 inhabitants during its peaks years around the turn of the century. In 1907, hurt by economic panic, Miners Basin was all but abandoned.
How ever, one miner, Gordon Fowler, stayed on for the next 50 years keeping the town in order, convinced that more gold waited in the steep, hard rock of the mountains. He died without realizing his dream.
